Epic Provencal jousts

Summer jousting at Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer

Every year, the appearance of the dashing “Saint-Mandrier” and “Saint-Flavien”, freshly repainted in red and blue, on the harbor quay signals the approach of the jousting season. From June to September, “the francs jouteurs mandréens” indulge in their favorite activity, Provençal jousting, a traditional sport that is both entertaining and impressive. At the end of the day or on a balmy evening in the village, stroll along the Saint-Mandrier harbor to watch their regular training sessions and tournaments.

The origins of Provençal jousting

La Tàrgo prouvençalo”, or nautical jousting in Provençal dialect, is one of the oldest Provençal games. This sport of strength, a blend of medieval honor and community festivity, played from May to September, originally brought together men only. Today, women and girls are joining the ranks. Traditionally, jousting starts with beginners, then the level rises as the competition progresses.

A friendly nautical duel

On the “tintaine” – a wooden floor about 2 metres above the water at the rear of the boats – two “combatants” stand and cross their lances. The winner of the “pass” is the one who, despite being hit by his or her opponent, manages not to fall into the water. The thud of the breastplate as the jousters touch, the popular fervor that surrounds the harbor on tournament evenings, and the “colorful” phrasing of the commentators, make this an unmissable part of any Provence-Mediterranean vacation.
