La Garde

All the facets of a Provencal town

Dynamic medieval town

Nestled atop a volcanic rock at the gateway to Toulon, the old village of La Garde has preserved its medieval character. Along its 3 km of coastline, pine-covered cliffs reveal secret coves, ideal starting points for underwater excursions. Inland, you can wander through over twenty hectares of forest and a hundred-hectare plain, in an ideal setting for nature observation. Throughout the seasons, La Garde offers a wide range of cultural events, including the famous “médiévales”.

Climbing in the old village

A village on the rock

For a first glimpse of the town, climb up to the old village. Set on a rock formed by a fissural eruption, this medieval town has everything to charm you: cobbled streets, shady squares and preserved ramparts that testify to the town’s rich heritage. From the chapel of Saint-Charles-de-Borromée to the remains of the castle at the top of the rock, a circuit is laid out, with some thirty explanatory plaques. From the top of the 70-metre rock, take time to contemplate the panoramic view over the city.

The departmental nature area of Le Plan

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, yet on the edge of town, the departmental nature area of Le Plan is a haven for local flora and fauna, as well as migratory birds. Located in a wetland area, Le Plan of La Garde features a pond for birdwatching. Walking, cycling, running, children’s games and horse riding are just some of the ways to discover the 135 hectares of this rejuvenating site.

Highlights

One of the highlights of La Garde’s festive calendar is Les Médiévales, an event that takes you back to the time of the knights. For three days in August, bravery and honor mingle with medieval dancing and epic jousting. As the days grow shorter and the air becomes milder, the streets of La Garde are decked out in enchantment to welcome the Hivernales. Nearly 100 chalets stand proudly, for a festive market where the spicy scents of comforting beverages and hot chestnuts enchant the senses.

Hidden coves

The coastline of La Garde is rich in flora and fauna, typical of Mediterranean shores. At Anse San Peyre, a secluded spot adorned with colorful fishermen’s cottages, the steep cliffs and lovers’ cave are a haven for wilderness enthusiasts. Not far from there, Anse Magaud, lined with pine trees, with its intimate, transparent waters, is ideal for an aquatic stroll on its underwater trail. From June to early September, you can admire the seabed of our Mediterranean Sea along the signposted route.
