Toulon

Art Deco nugget

You approach the Halles building – erected in 1929 – and are struck by its bold art deco style. Observe its geometric shapes, ironwork, monumental door and mosaic pediment: you’re looking at a jewel of modern architecture. As you climb the steps to the main entrance, you’ll notice a plaque engraved with Esther Poggio’s name. Since 1956, Les Halles has paid tribute to this heroine of the French Resistance, born into a family of retailers and with an extraordinary destiny.
